Monster Hunter is and will always be, one of the best games I have every played. you start by making your character and naming him or her. Then, since this is only the first game, you can choose your weapon. You have a few to go by and no one is better then the others, it's just how you play.
First is the Sword and Shield or the SnS as it is called. They deal the second least amount of damage, but is easily one of the best and easiest to use weapons to start with. It attack fast, lets you quit in the middle of a combo to roll away and block, all in one great package. They are also the easiest to make with elemental attribute.
Next it the Great Sword, or GS, Which is the one of the best against Wyverns, but the worst versus prey and other fast creatures in the game. This is a giant sword bigger than you. When you hit something, it hits its entire or most of its body. It does some of the highest damage, only seconded by the hammer, and has the highest sharpness in the game at higher levels. It also allows you to block one attack, which helps. The only down fall two the weapon is how slow it is. You and it move way to slow to do much more than hitting the thing constantly. If you want to run, you got to put up the sword.
After that is the lance. It is basically a spear with a large shield. This is the only weapon you can move while blocked. You only do two attacks with this, a forward thrust and a upward thrust. This is one of the best weapons versus wyverns and prey because you can also attack while blocking, though you lose your upward thrust. Plus they do a lot of damage toward wyverns in more places because it does piercing damage.
The Hammer is another weapon that does huge amounts of damage early on and the fact you can get them up faster then most weapons, other than the SnS's, the only thing is that they can't block, but you move normaly with them and can charge them up to do huge amounts of damage or knock a wyvern on its butt. They are hard to fight prey with though because of their short range.
The Last Melee Weapon is the Dual Swords, Or DS, these are great weapons if all you want to do is attack non-stop They don't do a whole lot of damage, but every attack you do counts as two, so if your blade do 200 damage, it is actually 400 because of the speed and the fact there is two of them. There sharpness falls quickly though and you can't block at all. The best thing is that you can Demonize which lets you attack faster and do more damage, but you have to watch out for your stamina bar because it drains them. Even the lowest level of these weapons if used right can tear through Dromes like nothing.
If you are reading this and going, great, no ranged weapons, keep on reading because here they are.
First you got the Light Bowgun or LBG. It is like a cross bow in looks, but fires bullets. LBG's are faster to reload and do less damage then the Heavy bowguns, read down, but the big thing is that you move the fastest with them, meaning your pellet shots do more damage the your enemy because you can hit it more often and your normal shots can hit with out aiming. You can also do allot of range damage with the Pierce Shots as well.
Heavy Bowguns, HBG, on the other hand can only be used at distances because you are too slow to do more closer damage, but you can usually hold more ammo with them than the LBG which means less reloading and you do more damage.
Well, that's all I feel like putting in right now. I might add more later, if I remember.
