I hate to say this, but this book really bit the bullet. I can normally read a novel in 6-8 hours, depending on the length. I read Lover Mine in 12 hours if that gives you an idea. It took me 3 DAYS to make my way through this book
The first book in the Feral Warrior series Desire Untamed introduces us to Lyon, who is a "Feral Warrior".
Ok, so we have these "Therians" who are an immortal race that after a war with "Mage" race, joined forces with each other millennia ago to bind Satanan and his Daemons (which is a common enemy) into a dagger. Now then, the Daemon's also have this weird swarm like creaturs called Draden that have a ghost-like body with a melted head-like thing with sharp teeth that suck the souls out of the Therians. Basically, like a vampire ghost that the only way to kill it is naturally, rip out the heart... out of a ghost like body.
So, once the Mage and Therians bound Satanan into the dagger, there is only one "Soul" left that lives among particular clans of the Therians that create these "Feral Warriors"
With me so far? No? Yeah...
These Feral Warriors, which by the way are named after the animal souls that live in them (Lyon, Jaguar, Paenthar, Hawke...) getting the picture? Kewl... These Feral Warriors hunt the draden, but they have what is known as the "Radiant" that uses her powers to link to nature to give the warriors strength that also allows them to transform into their animals. Since their previous Radiant died 6 months before the story starts, their power to connect and transform are almost nonexistant at the start of the story.
So, the warriors are searching for the new Radiant, because the old one died, but this Radiant has been raised as a human. Now, not once in the story does it explain how she came to be with the humans instead of raised with her Therian family. In fact, she doesn't even know her "mother" who is dying, isn't her mother. I can deal with that. Adoptions happen all the time, but we never learn how this happened. Instead, we see Lyon, who leads the warriors, finally learn where the "Radiant" is and so he goes to retrieve her. He is known as the "Finder" so he always knows where she is no matter how far away she is. (Except during the 6 month period after the previous Radiant died) Now for him to locate the Radiant, he is doing a 'blooding" ceremony, but although he is the leader, he asks the youngest male in the group, Foxx to get the 'ceremonial dagger' and they head out to do the ceremony. While doing the ceremony, low and behold, Foxx has the wrong dagger, and has the one that Satanan and the Daemon's are bound into. Of course, they don't 'realize' this until the ceremony is almost over. And although Lyon gets pissed at Foxx, they basically shrug their shoulders because well, there have to be certain things to happen to release Satanan and the Daemons from the dagger, one of which happens to be that it must have the blood of each of the Ferals on the dagger. See where this is going? So they use the dagger anyway to finish the ceremony, which in turns, leaves each of their blood on the dagger. But, he learns where the Radiant is.
So, he goes for the Radiant, Kara MacAllister, and once he demands she "bare her breast" to show him the marks as the Radiant, which happened to appear on her when the other Radiant dies, he just ups and kidnaps her while her dying mother is in the room upstairs.
So, she wakes up in the car he is kidnapping her in, which normally shouldn't happen because the power he used to knock her out should have left her out for at least 6 hours but 10 minutes later, she is awake, so she happens to cause him to wreck so she can escape. Now, this part really, REALLY got to me. She jumps out of his car, sees some of her friends in the town and instead of saying "Help! This asshole is trying to kidnap me!" She merely says, "Mitch! I'm borrowing your car." Then she jumps into his truck and goes back home.
Believable? Sorry, but if somebody like that is kidnapping me, I'm sure as hell not going to jump out and say "I'm borrowing your car!" Now Lyon, who has wrecked into a car of Mitch's friend, gets out, unhooks the bumpers that are stuck together, while Mitch is like "Dude, you're superman or something. My friend is going to be pissed."
Ok, so he goes back to Kara's mother's house where her dying mother who is extremely weak to begin with (dying from cancer), is now laying out on the lawn in the freezing cold rain because she tried to go after a daughter who never had a chance to scream over the TV or anything that she is being kidnapped, but her mother knows it, makes it downstairs, and out to the lawn. Hmmm....
Ok, so Kara is trying to help her in and asks Lyon, who just kidanpped her, to help her get her dying mother back into the house. He puts her on the sofa, Kara is trying to call for an ambulance for her mother, despite her mother saying "No, don't call an ambulance", power goes out, no longer able to call for an ambulance.
He tries to tell Kara she is the Radiant, that her 'mother' isn't her mother, but Kara doesn't want to believe it, until her mother gets out a single word when Kara asks her mother if she is really her mother, "No." and then mother dies.
Suddenly, there is a draden attack (the only thing half-way believable part since apparently they are drawn to Therian essence) yet he hasn't had to deal with the Draden until after mother dies. Ok, I can live with that. Except for the fact that despite they are drawn to Therian essence, not once in Kara's life has she been attacked by these 'dradens' because "She was living a human life." Ummm...should it matter considering she is still Therian?
He fights the Draden, Kara suddenly knows how to pull out the heart and kill them, although there was a little nudging from Lyon on how to do it, but it has cut up her arm and hand with its sharp teeth.
So, the draden are dead, no more are drawn to his Therian essence, despite the fact that they are all alone and this would be the perfect time to do so.
So, he uses his mouth, which apparently can heal injuries, to suck on Kara's fingers to heal them, which naturally gives her multiple orgasms like she's never had before while her dead 'mother' is lying on the sofa beside them.
Then, Lyon and Kara bury her mother in the back yard and get one of the other Feral Warriors to meet them somewhere close with the airplane to take them back to Feral House because he decides even though she is willing to go with him, he no longer wants to use the car to kidnap her and will fly home instead.
They get home and there are warriors all ready to pounce her because guess what? They are going to have a 'paring' ceremony that will mate her to one of them so that her Ascension as the Radiant is successful. Naturally, the one who gives her the multiple orgasm with nothing more than a lick, doesn't end up as the "One" who is chosen. Why? Well, obviously there is a mistake. Hmm? You think?
So, they try to start teaching Kara how to be a Radiant, and although she has never once in her life experienced any of this, has remarkable control over it to the point they can boost up the time when they can do the ceremony.
Then, there is suddenly a revelation that Kara, who didn't even know she was Therian may now be the enemy Mage. Feral Warriors kill Mage enemies. How do we learn this? Because Lyon who isn't supposed to be touching her because Vyhper was chosen as the mate, but is busy messing around with Foxx' girlfriend, is in making out with Kara and suddenly discovers that a little copper item that is circular and stuff, is embedded in her butt cheek so naturally, she is a liar enemy who is working to decieve them when she didn't even know she was "Therian". He uses a dagger to cut this item out of her butt cheek, yes, he only felt in her, but knew what it was, so he gets pissed, pulls out a dagger, and cuts it out of her even though minutes before, he was making out with her. Then he goes on a furious rampage in which he splinters everything in Kara's room, so she tries to runaway. He catches her at their sacred stone, where he decides that since she a Mage, she can't be the Radiant, and uses that excuse to make out with her instead of killing her as he was going to do. When they finally finish her, once again, multiple orgasm thing that would have left you or me dead, they are suddenly attacked by Draden. Naturally, while they made out, they weren't attacked. So she draws on the Radiant power to help fight the draden while he calls for his warriors to come help them. *sighs*
Seriously, I'm not going on. There is just too much to go on.
This book just really, really rubbed me wrong with way too many conveniences, not to mention multiple orgasms from nothing more than a kiss or a lick, including during the "Pairing Ceremony" when Lyon kisses her, which all of the warriors have to do to decide who is her mate. Yes, she has this orgasm from his kiss in front of all of the other warriors who sit there an ogle her when she does it, but the fingertips are supposed to have blue flame appear on the tips of the finger if they kiss her and she is the mate, which naturally, doesn't happen when Lyon kisses her, but it does to Vyhper. And why is this happening? Because somebody has brought Mage magic into the house (a "dark item") and so it is throwing off the pairing ceremony, which we of course don't learn until much later in the book. And of course, wouldn't you know, the 'mage' is actually among the warriors, although they didn't know it because this particular mage who shouldn't know how to do it, learned how to change her eye color so that the copper ring around the eyes doesn't show. And, just like this mage shouldn't know how to do a spell that 'clones' the warriors by using the dradens, she has learned it and does it by 'separating' their souls and placing part of one into a draden. So, she has somewhere or other learned some and I quote, "Extremely Powerful Mage Abilities", but nobody knows she is a mage instead of a Therian, although the warriors can scent a Therian, and has used her unknown abilities to clone the arriors so that she can perform a torturing ritual on Kara before she ascends as the Radiant to blood her to help release Satanan and the Deamons from the dagger because there is already blood on the dagger from the ferals during the ceremony to locate the Radiant. And of course, Vyhper turns out to be the one helping the mage, so the dagger is now missing, convenient, and one of the draden clones has escaped, which if the other half of Tigher's soul isn't returned to him, he will go feral. And this starts book 2 Obsession Untamed where he and two other Feral Warriors fight THOUSANDS of Dradens alone all night long. Granted, they can heal themselves, but we are talking Thousands of these creatures swarm them. Not to mention that the Draden clone who escaped attacks a FBI officer and tries to suck out her soul (although they can't really live off human souls for long) but she shot the clone who in turn expelled part of Tigher's stolen soul into her so that he now sees what the clone is doing, but through her eyes because she now has visions of it. *sighs* I'm so glad I got some new books so I didn't have to finish reading that one....
Like I said, there are just WAY too many conveniences in this book. I can handle one or two if necessary, even handle not learning how Kara managed to end up living with the humans, but don't make this entire story a convenient thing to happen. Additionally, there are too many things that remind me of ideas 'borrowed' from other stories.
Top that off, and the only way to do this Assension Cermemony is with little cuts on Kara that she joins with all the other warriors, one touch a cut on her hands, ankles and other places, while her "mate" has sex with her "Taking her from behind" *rolls eyes* so that she can call on the Earth that makes her "radiant" while having the sex and touching the other warriors.
Seriously folks, save yourself a headache. This book will make you want to weep just to make it end.
