Ok, I have found a new series by Joey W Hill that I adore. In the first book, A Mermaid's Kiss which I haven't read yet, but fully intend to, Jonah (an angel and demon mix) falls in love with a mermaid Anna, who is the descendant from the mermaid in The Little Mermaid. However, this one isn't the Walt Disney fairy tale. It is a lot more intricate than that and well done. However, in this book, A Witch's Beauty we meet David, a 30 year old human born Angel who is in love with Mina, the supposed seawitch. Think of the movie and you'll have her, only with more beauty...
This story is as good as Joey Hill's vampire queen series. To be honest with you, she has become my favorite author now!
This story is done really well, taking us through oceans to heaven, to deserts, and back to the ocean. We see a seawitch who has been tortured and tormented from practically the day she was born, believing she isn't worth loving. David is the angel sent to protect her from The Dark Ones and interesting twist on Hell itself, but it isn't actually Hades. Lucifer rules Hades, these creatures dwell in a place of their own making but would represent the place Dante (from Dante's Inferno) called Hell. More importantly, David has volunteered to protect Mina, despite the fact she is determined she doesn't need protection, to the point of changing one of Marcellus' angel wings into a bat wing. Quite funny that is! But she can't shake David so easily. She has thought of him since he defeated her in a battle in the first book to the point of obsession. She tries everything she can do to shake him, but he still keeps coming. We even see her in her dragon form when she tries to eat David for leaving her alone in Heaven too long. The light of Heaven makes the Darkness inside of her come forth. Her mother was a seawitch and her father a Dark One that escaped his realm.
The story is fabulous! We see a lot of Mina's abilities to create illusions even to keep her company, since even the merfolks who don't mind asking for potions to help them, still shun her because of her mixed heritage.
So if you get a chance to read this, just sit back and enjoy. You'll get the feel of The Little Mermaid story in here as well, but not to the point of sickening disgust. It is a darker story than what the fairy tales talk about.
Enjoy!
